Sony files patents for universal games controller

According to an application made by Sony to the US Patent and Trademark Office, the corporation are looking into the possibility of  creating a universal controller capable of displaying different game controller layouts which could be used with various consoles.

The patent as found by GoRumours describes the perihperal as having an “LCD… present[ing], depending on what type of game console a user has selected, a controller key layout for a first type of game console or a controller key layout for a second type of game console.”

Moreover, the patent also describes the controller as being able to “emulate the key layout of an older controller that may no longer be available, so that an owner of an older game console can still use the console,” so theoretically if the rumours of SEGA wanting to bring old titles, say from the Dreamcast to the PlayStation Store, the transition would be near painless with the adaptable controller.
